| Has this film ever been announced/developed/workshopped as a musical? More than Pretty Woman, Tootsie, or Mrs. Doubtfire it seems like a natural for the musical theatre, i.e. most of the characters are operatic to begin with. And all the restaurant scenes and the big numbers set in Little Italy! Not since "Bravo Giovanni!" Or does John Patrick Shanley own the rights (uncommon, most screenplays are owned by the company that films them) and hold a tight fist? | |

| Zena Goldrich wrote a brilliant score to it years ago when she was in the BMI Workshop. | |

| Is it’s hard to fit a chorus into the show naturally. Both movies are really two person plays with a lot of scenes between the lead characters. Bridges of Madison county is another one. I think why hairspray, producers and millie to name a few is that chorus numbers work because people just don’t come out to sing a group song but are on stage a lot. | |

| Why does there need to be a chorus? | |

| I wouldn’t want a chorus in a musical of Moonstruck just like I wouldn’t want a chorus in N2N or Falsettos or DEH. | |

| Except--there is quite a bit in Moonstruck about public persona versus private persona, about the pressure to conform and the awareness of the expectations of others, often literally embodied by other people in the scene. The proposal in the restaurant, the rant in the deli, the date at the met, the tossing of the drink into the man's face in the restaurant--even the Aunt and Uncle and their clientele ("you were a tiger last night") and the grandfather with his group of friends. There is not only room for a chorus, there is reason. At the very least, they can function as the chorus does in The Light in the Piazza or Adding Machine or Here Lies Love. Also, there are some wonderful moments for secondary characters in the published Shanley script for the movie--Nada Despotovich's character has some additional arc that could be exploited for the musical. I am among those, however, that find the movie nearly perfect. It would have to be done with great care to please many that hold it near and dear. |

| There would need to be a chorus because MOONSTRUCK should be a BIG Broadway musical, not a regional theatre bromide like N2M or Falsettos, neither of which can be said to have captured the public's taste the way HAIRSPRAY or LA CAGE or other BIG shows did. and Idina Menzel would only be perfect in Cher's role. Thanks to all who responded, seems there has been at least some interest in this idea in the past. |

| Moonstruck is small intimate story. It shouldn’t be a BIG show. What a terrible idea. | |

| There's always Broadway magic and ingenuity. They managed to write in a terrific chorus with a show-stopping number from the two-character TWO FOR THE SEESAW. PRETTY WOMAN went through so many incarnations in movie development that it's a wonder they found something to musicalize. All of the substance in the original script was replaced by 'gloss' in the final film......not much there to create musical magic. The popularity of the film ensured an audience which eventually dissipated. I do see MOONSTRUCK working in the right hands. | |

| The book was by Shanley, and the lyrics were by Susan Birkenhead. If you scroll down a bit at the link, you will see a mention of a reading that had been done a few days before this 2001 column appeared. The cast included Idina Menzel, Christopher Innvar, Dana Ivey, Len Cariou and Robert LuPone. |

| "Has this film ever been announced/developed/workshopped as a musical?" It has been announced at least twice that a musical adaptation was in the works, the last time I recall was only a couple of years ago. I have no knowledge of details about workshops, etc. |
