| I was unfamiliar with Ms Kirschenbaum until today, but the description in the obituary of her trying to get free tix from patrons at the opera reminds me a lot of the woman, much reviled here, who does this at theatres all over town and who had a documentary made about her. Without wanting to besmirch her memory in any way...what's the difference? Is it just that this lady was a more pleasant person? | |

| "Without wanting to besmirch her memory in any way...what's the difference? Is it just that this lady was a more pleasant person?" Having encountered both women many times, I would say the main difference is that there was a HUGE difference in attitude. And, as far as I know, Lois would never attempt to sit in a prime orchestra seat that happened to be empty when she had gotten into the theater by purchasing or securing for free a cheap ticket in the balcony, and she CERTAINLY never relinquished a seat only with great reluctance when the rightful ticket holder showed up, as that other......person does so often. |

| Lois was someone people actually wanted to talk to, and she would share her tips with other top fans or people who asked (I believe for the most part), about among other things, upcoming performance schedules and what operas singers were doing, last minute cancellations, etc. that she got many times from the singers or their managers themselves. Unlike stories about that other lady, I don't think Lois ever made a nuisance of herself about finding tickets -- she usually sat way up high anyway, and she was legally blind with thick glasses and binoculars. She was so much of a fixture that she was almost like a minor celebrity to opera cognoscenti in the lobby and auditorium. I think there was more controversy with the other lady you mentioned, including her methods of getting tickets; there are testimonies of some actively avoiding or having words with that lady being in their seat, etc. Lois wasn't controversial; she just was rather admired as a superfan who was ultra-knowledgeable and passionate about opera. | |

| During a period of years at least a decade ago when I frequented the Met (a brief obsession), I would see this charming and delightful lady near the entrance looking for a ticket. There was something about her - well-spoken, self-effacing, smart, funny, vulnerable, courteous - which made you want to give her a hug and help her out. I think I recall handing her a ticket now and then. Many others did, too. She was there every time I attended. So sad to know she is gone. RIP dear Lois. | |
