Big error in Jennifer Tepper's otherwise marvelous "The Untold Stories of Broadway, Volume 4"
Posted by: pecansforall 01:51 pm EDT 04/08/21

Tepper's book was published in February of this year. Can you spot the glaring error in the following excerpt?

Although the Minskoff [Theatre] has been home to many beloved shows, only six of the musicals it has housed have been hits. Two of these were moved from the theaters they actually opened in (PIPPIN, 1977 and THE TAP DANCE KID, 1984). Two were modest hits (THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, 1981 and SWEET CHARITY, 1986), one was the largely forgotten BLACK AND BLUE (1989), and one is currently running: THE LION KING. The Minskoff has yet to be the originating home to a Tony Award-winning Best Musical.

If you haven't read it yet don't let that hold you back. It really is a great read along with the others in the series.

I think this must be the error: "the Minskoff [Theatre] has been home to many beloved shows"

Sorry couldn't resist ;-)

Tepper's book was published in February of this year.

"...and one [musical] is currently running: THE LION KING."

No, it's not currently running. Certainly a huge error, given the context of the book having been published this past February.

If we're to take Tepper at her exact word, the show would be in performances now. It's not.

Due respect, that one's a singularly nitpicky 'error'

A book is not a newspaper or a magazine, and a book that's compiled as an oral history should not be filed under "current events".
This is obviously written for posterity, and not for only the year 2021.
Were we take you at your exact word, the book's intended audience would only be people who read it between March and (presumably) sometime late this summer/early fall (it's anybody's guess), and therefore should have been written and edited specifically and only for that group of people. For all we know, and given the pace of the publishing industry, she could've turned in final proofs of the book last summer when people (including the Broadway League) were still speculating/hoping theatre would come back in early 2021.
You're faulting her for prognostication skills she never claimed to possess, and assigning her a responsibility that isn't hers, for a project designed for larger purposes and a longer shelf life.

What's funny is that I take that point, but see it the other way. A book that is trying to chronical a history of a theatre might well note that production was interrrupeted for over a year due to a pandemic - something that readers in the future might want clarified.

I'm assuming that the text still could have been corrected.

In any case, pecansforall asked us if we could find the "glaring error" in the quoted excerpt, and for me, to say a show is "still running" when it isn't is indeed a glaring error.

But hey, only on ATC would this observation become a national crisis, lol.

To my knowledge, "The Lion King," unlike some other shows, has not posted a closing notice, loaded out of the theatre, or issued a public announcement that it will not return to Broadway during the reopening. ("Frozen" did all those things last May.)

Like many other shows, its performances have been temporarily suspended by the pandemic. But Disney has terminated the runs of neither "Lion King" and "Aladdin."

If she's using the traditional commercial definition of hit, then, as BroadwayTonyJ pointed out, The Tap Dance Kid, Black and Blue and the Sweet Charity revival do not count as hits. Nor, for that matter, does Sunset Boulevard, even though it did win the Tony so, yeah, that is a big error.

If she's not using the traditional definition of hit, as it seems she isn't, then Irene should certainly be in there.

In addition, she points out that Pippin and The Tap Dance Kid were transfers, while neglecting to mention that Pirates and Lion King were transfers.

The first volume in the series was astoundingly error-ridden, even if you don't count the errors made by the interviewees. I haven't read any of the others.

It's essentially unedited. Lots of great people and anecdotes but no editors' eye making the stories or interviews readable. It's like reading court transcripts.

Yes, but you would hope that the facts (or supposed facts) presented by Tepper would be correct. This is why I wrote "even if you don't count the errors made by the interviewees."

Also, names should be spelled correctly. Just took a quick glance at the first volume, and there are ridiculous error in the parts written by (or at least credited to) Tepper, as is the case with the passage (written by Tepper) quoted by pecansforall.

3 of the shows mentioned were actually commercial failures: The Tap Dance Kid, Sweet Charity 1986, Black and Blue.

It seems like language was dropped.

I suspect that revisions in the editing process led to the omission of language that is crucial to Tepper's meaning. It should probably be something like, "The Minskoff has yet to be the originating home to a Tony Award-winning Best Musical that turned a profit."

It was the originating theatre for SUNSET BOULEVARD, which won the 1995 BEST MUSICAL TONY
