Nice 90 minute concert and monologue with John Cullum, "An Accidental Star"
Posted by: rossde 02:26 pm EDT 04/11/21

I just watched this gem of a presentation by John Cullum. Tony award winner actor in numerous shows including Camelot, On a Clear Day, Shenandoah, On the twentieth Century, and the Scottsboro Boys and so many more. He tells stories and sings a number of songs which is amazing given his age of 91. Voice is not where it once was but he is the living embodiment of 60 years of musical theatre history. Directed by Lonny Price and Matt Coward.

Still planning to see this. I think it's available through April 22.

I also liked this, especially his engaging raconteur style.
Cullum's conversational tone and anecdotes segued nicely into the songs. For me, the storytelling, rather than the singing, was the highlight.

I saw it. I really like him and the early career stories were interesting, but I found it painful to hear him try to sing those songs especially knowing the cast albums so well. I’m not a fan of concerts so I’m not the best judge.

And I dislike monologues that use the framing I wasn’t going to talk about this but I will now” like it isn’t planned. It’s a scripted show don’t try to make the audience think you are off script to reveal something. Liza does that in concert singing her moms rainbow song. Audiences aren’t stupid.

It’s an entertaining and inspiring one-man show of songs and stories written and performed by a 91-year-old man (and by the way, has there EVER been a one-person show by anyone of that advanced age?), that was filmed without an audience, and moreover, before it ever had a chance to play any public performances, and now getting a world premiere in this beautifully filmed digital presentation. By my book, that makes it a tremendous achievement of both confidence AND craft.

To nitpick the piece by calling out one commonly used rhetorical device (one that as you say is often a part of these things) and by saying his voice doesn’t sound the same as it did on the cast albums in the 60s and 70s (!!a,) - but then saying “I’m not a fan of concerts anyway”, even though this show is hardly a concert – I think there are only 8 songs or so in the entire piece – well... that seems at best a little bit like you’re missing the point, and at worst downright churlish. So while it’s probably unfair to say maybe some audience are stupid, I’d simply suggest that some audiences can’t appreciate what they’re given and tend to see the glass half-empty.

Wasn't Kitty Carlisle Hart 95 when she did her show? That she could do it at all was remarkable. That she could do it so well as astounding.

I’m glad you liked it.

And I wasn’t going to start a post of my negative review. I only responded to other posts. Just because he’s 90 doesn’t mean I have to like it—I wonder how Barbra or cher will sound in their 20th farewell tours. I also gave my reasons and didn’t just say I didn’t like it. If you don’t agree with those reasons ok, but at least others have context on why I wouldn’t recommend it so they can determine on their own whether to spend $25 (I think that’s the cost). I think it’s a very legitimate statement to say I’m not a fan of concerts. I know many on this board love them and go often to Feinstein’s or studio 54. Knowing my bias on concerts allows others to weigh my opinion to their own likes.
