Has anyone watched angry raucous and shamelessly gorgeous?

I like the cast but I don’t think I’d like the plot much. Does the reading work well (sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t).

I found the writing to be embarrassingly amateurish. The cast is strong but the stilted dialog and cardboard characters defeat them all with the exception of Alicia Stith. Her character on the page is an idea rather than a person, but her performance in this reading finds some reality and elevates the material.

Stith seemed to be off-script

Which I think really helped with her performance. The two matriarchs seemed to be do a lot of reading—familiar with the text but still relying on it which probably hurts the performance a bit. Overall, I did enjoy it.

I just kept asking if there might have been a better script for Rashad and Allen.

Or if they had switched roles. Rashad's placid demeanor might have been a better fit for the supportive friend and Allen would have been more believable as the firebrand artist.

There has to be some play with strong roles for older sisters other than John Gabriel Borkman. (Although I think they would be amazing in that play.)

Have these two sisters ever appeared together in anything before?

I enjoyed it (watched it earlier today)--it's a more substantial play than the synopsis makes it sound like, although there's a bit of deus ex machina at the end. Rashad is excellent and Alicia Stith is a tremendous find (although the combination of iffy sound and accent work made some of her lines a bit tough to decipher).

It's also only 80 minutes long, which is my favorite length of play.

Seth, looking forward to The Baltimore Waltz

I enjoyed it. It was fun watching Rashad playing a faded diva trying to hold onto her past glory, including her past body. Lots of amusing theatre jokes. Not sure if its been produced anywhere. Considering that Cleage has a connection to Alliance, as does Rashad, I was wondering if the part had been written for her. (Debbie Allen was fine as the sister, even if it was a bit of stunt casting.) Agree that Alicia Stith was delightful. Wasn't a pure Zoom reading -- there were more single camera shots than Brady Bunch. Still a reading, but since the play doesn't seem to have any significant action, that wasn't a problem.

It was produced at Alliance theater in Atlanta. Nmi

I enjoyed it too, and agree with Seth that it is more substantial (eventually) than the synopsis makes it sound.
Occasional iffy sound not a deal-breaker for me, though I would have appreciated CC.
