| I found the writing to be embarrassingly amateurish. The cast is strong but the stilted dialog and cardboard characters defeat them all with the exception of Alicia Stith. Her character on the page is an idea rather than a person, but her performance in this reading finds some reality and elevates the material. | |

| Stith seemed to be off-script | |

| Which I think really helped with her performance. The two matriarchs seemed to be do a lot of reading—familiar with the text but still relying on it which probably hurts the performance a bit. Overall, I did enjoy it. | |

| I just kept asking if there might have been a better script for Rashad and Allen. Or if they had switched roles. Rashad's placid demeanor might have been a better fit for the supportive friend and Allen would have been more believable as the firebrand artist. There has to be some play with strong roles for older sisters other than John Gabriel Borkman. (Although I think they would be amazing in that play.) Have these two sisters ever appeared together in anything before? |
