Close miking does have its advantages though. It makes softer instruments balance easier, making more combination of sounds possible. The soft dynamic of the lowest range of the flute, for instance, would be able to be featured better over textures that normally would cancel it out. Acoustic guitar comes though much better in balance with the rest of the rhythm section. Harp can be more dynamic. Also, sections themselves can be made to balance better - a full brass section won't overtake the rest of the band, etc.
So, it's not just about the orchestra being "amplified," it's about making a better use of colors and balances. |
