***When Close reprised the role in the 2017 revival, I built a trip around her show so that I could experience her performance on stage. I was not disappointed and was easily able to suspend any disbelief I may have had about her playing Norma at age 70.***

There is a long and honored tradition of actors returning to their most famous roles in revivals, even if they are "too old" for those roles by any rational measure. In those cases, many audience members -- myself included -- are thrilled to suspend disbelief in order to experience a recreation of a legendary performance. But I think most people would agree that it's a very different situation when the film medium is involved, both because film is more literal than the stage and also, from a purely technical and logistical standpoint, because the distance of the stage is removed.
