what am i missing here? Why is race being brought into this as if that's the issue with Rudin?

Did Scott Rudin existing as a producer stop or hinder any POC producers from being producers? I'm a bit baffled by this idea.

There's a sad lack of POC producers on Broadway... was Rudin or are any other non-poc producers meant to step aside and "let" them produce? Were they somehow impeding this before?

And why is this now about race? Rudin's issues are about abuse and toxicity in the workplace, not racism on broadway. Right? Rudin being sent packing was not to make room for POC producers who hadn't had a chance before. His stepping back is not signaling anything more than people standing up about the power abuses that go on. He wasn't cancelled for producing a Music Man revival that ended up with all white leads. ... some would have liked to, but that isn't what's happening here. (I was bummed that Sutton was cast for many reasons, not only because a poc Marian for the first time on broadway would have been awesome)

It's worth noting that he also produced a major Broadway revival of Carousel that starred a not-at-all-famous black actor as Billy, for the first time. Didn't he also recently bring Sweat to Broadway? And didn't he get Shuffle Along (one of the best shows I've ever seen, employing a huge list of exceptionally talented POC artists, telling POC history) on broadway? And the hugely praised revival of A Raisin in the Sun? And Fences? And Seven Guitars? And didn't he produce Caroline or Change on Broadway? Did anyone think CoC was gonna make money? Or Shuffle Along? They should have, two of the best things I've ever seen, but no one expected them to.

Rudin, credited as producer, on these amazing productions, helped bring a lot of POC stories, art and artistry to Broadway audiences and Tony noms/awards. He's not some savior, he has his reasons for gravitating to what shows he does and what talent and what he gets behind as a producer, and maybe other producers would have taken those shows on ...

None of this makes it at all excusable that he behaves so monstrously as a person or producer. It doesn't mean he didn't do terrible things while producing amazing things (like the Audra pregnancy stuff with Shuffle Along, for example). Everything he's been accused of should not be tolerated and he should be held accountable.

I'm just saying, I don't think racism and racial bias in the theater industry is the reason why Rudin was cancelled.
