"I'm sorry but I'd much rather a producer who wants prestige in art/culture/entertainment and gets the money and makes the stars align to put things on broadway that artistically should be seen even if they are risky commercial ventures, than someone only producing shows that will be clear hits, or producing them in a way that makes sure there's a profit. If the investors feel scammed by him or feel his shows are a bad investment then they should not invest if the prestige of those projects does not appeal to them. Lucky for commercial theater, prestige is a big element for investors and producers alike."

I agree with every word of that, I was just addressing your comment about Rudin's productions in comparison with those of non-profit theaters. If some investors in commercial Broadway productions are happy to be involved for the prestige rather than the profit -- and, obviously, some are -- more power to them. But I would say that doesn't extend to saying it's perfectly okay for a producer to spend money needlessly and recklessly, and it's certainly not okay for a producer to end up owing $6 million to an ad agency.
