Honestly I don't understand how Sondheim or Prince (let alone Furth) thought that either "Happily Ever After" or "Marry Me A Little" worked as the end of this show. The songs themselves do not feel like any kind of final beat or statement, musically or dramatically. I can see either as the end of Act One, but without "Being Alive" there's no arc for Bobby, it's just a stubborn critique of marriage, redundant at the end of a show about that, and MMAL is a half-way point emotionally (which is why it's so brilliant half-way through the show). I can't imagine it, and I'm very glad they got to "Being Alive" as the end (it's also just such a better song than HEA, by miles).
