Honestly, that's exactly the show's biggest problem as it winds down.

The New York Times review of this final season (it was in their television e-newsletter; not sure if it actually ran in the paper or online) said something to the effect of Shor being a signfiicant loss, and (with the critic having seen all the episodes) that as a result, the show spends its entire final season searching for conflict rather than revealing it through any deeper understanding of its ongoing characters; that rather than picking up where things left off and bringing things to a natural resolution, it feels instead like the 12 episodes just keep setting up new contrived obstacles and spinning its wheels marking time until the finale. New York Magazine in its review of the season went even further and said that Miriam Shor's absence was "one of the greatest travesties of all time".
