I realize that. But I do think it's the intention of the article. Scott Rudin was so mean to him. Then he killed himself. I guess I shouldn't argue the intention of the author or witnesses... but it's difficult to imagine an editor not realizing many readers would draw that conclusion.
I have no soft spot for Rudin and I think he deserves what he gets. But. I think this implication is harmful. Rudin's behavior is unacceptable even if the victim doesn't kill themselves. This young man's suicide isn't somehow more heartbreaking because Scott Rudin was mean to him. Trying to find an explanation or justification for suicide, aside from mental illness and depression... I think that can cause a lot of harm.
