I'm sorry. I acknowledged Rudin was a terrible person and also acknowledged his behavior was unacceptable. "Mean to him" was meant as shorthand as we are all aware the behavior was inexcusable and likely unforgivable. Please accept apologies if it came across as flip. It was not my intention.

I meant to say. And frankly thought I did say. That suicide is an immense tragedy. It is not made more so because someone was bullied.

I also meant to say that suicide is not the response of a rational mind to any situation or form of suffering. Implicating bullying as the main or motivating cause of suicide is not supported by research and is potentially harmful. Research shows that kids (as most research on bullying is focused on children for obvious reasons) who ARE bullies are statistically almost as likely to turn to have suicidal thoughts as kids who are bullied. And that victims of bullying who are also bullies themselves have the highest risk factors. I say this just to suggest it's much more complicated than cause and effect. So. No, not a coincidence. But also attempting to implicate Scott Rudin behavior, or suggesting his behavior was somehow more awful because this bright young man killed himself, is not supported by research and perpetuates a harmful misunderstanding of mental health and suicidal ideation.

Anyway. I regret saying anything. I've suffered with severe depression for a good portion of my life and lost a close friend and a family member to suicide. I meant to be helpful. I'm sorry I apparently bungled it so horribly.

There's a pamphlet on the CDC website that might offer a more coherent argument. Or not!
