Of course there's no direct reference in the text or the lyrics to him being white, but it's clear from the text and the lyrics that he is supposed to be a very specific type in terms of race, religion, cultural background, and economic status.

All these terms getting bandied about. If there's no direct reference to him being white, why do you say that he's supposed to be a "very specific type in terms of race?" Also, I don't see much evidence that Jamie is religious. I think you meant ethnicity, not religion - which I assume is what you're saying by referring to "cultural background." In terms of economic status, I hope to god you're not telling me that a black man can't have the same status.

That's still "blackface." Just as a white actor playing an Asian character is now referred to as Yellowface. It's not about the literal nature of stage makeup, it's about the appropriation.
