I think the original production, aside from the two leads, who were terrific, did the material no favors.

It was very awkward with the two actors not interacting at all to the point of looking away when the other actor is doing their scene. And there were some needlessly big set pieces that, to my mind, really distracted from the action on stage.

And I agree with the actor who thought that the Minetta Lane was the wrong theatre for it, simply because the piece would have benefitted from the small three quarter thrust of the Newhouse, which would have allowed the audience to be closer and the show to be more intimate, rather than making the cast try to put it over to the balcony.
