I've always found this argument to be disingenuous. Are you really saying that some degree of "type casting" is completely unwarranted in musical theater because of the other conventions? For example, sould you cast an incredibly talented 75-year-old as Lili in a production of CARNIVAL in which everyone else was cast traditionally in terms of age?

Well, I must say, I've never heard this argument phrased quite that way.....
