"I would accept a great older actress or a black actor in roles that are neither older or black. Why anyone chooses to deny themselves the pleasure of a possible great performance baffles me."
I'm certainly willing to believe that you would accept a great older actor -- let's say 65 years of age -- in the role of a teenager under special circumstances. If, for example, the entire show were cast regardless of the age of the characters, and/or if the actor in question were recreating a role for which they had become famous when young.
I don't believe you would accept an unknown 65-yeear-old as a teenager under any normal circumstances. So, in my opinion, this would be an example of how acceptance of the usual conventions of musical theater -- people bursting into song as dialogue, etc. -- does not imply that age- and type-appropriate casting is completely unnecessary.
