Exactly, and I understand why publicists or other external parties had (or have) a desire to influence what day their news runs. But from the perspective of the Times itself, the question makes no sense to me. No journalist or editor thinks "let's fill the Saturday edition with stories that don't matter and save the good stuff for the other days." If they think it's worth writing, it's worth publishing in any of the seven days a week the paper is published.
