Awards are subjective, so it's comparing apples and oranges. On Davis' behalf, she did play the title character and win SAG's Best Actress Award.

Some say Davis didn't have enough screen time in ''Ma Rainey's'' to compete for Best Actress. She clocked in at 26 minutes and 41 seconds.

That's longer than a number of other women who have WON the Oscar in that same category: Patricia Neal (''Hud''), Louise Fletcher (''One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest''), Nicole Kidman (''The Hours'') and Frances McDormand (''Fargo''). Davis' screen time in ''Ma Rainey'' is even longer than Anthony Hopkins' in ''Silence of the Lambs,'' for which he won his 1st Oscar for Best Actor: 24 minutes and 52 seconds.

I agree, however, that the Acting Oscars shouldn't have been moved to follow Best Picture. I felt terrible for Simone Ledward Boseman, who spoke on behalf of her husband when he had won at the Golden Globes and SAGs. The Oscars built her more up for an emotional moment that never arrived.

One more theater tie-in: When Frances McDormand won Best Actress, she quoted ''Macbeth'': ''I have no words. My voice is in my sword.''
