****All your points may be spot on but oh-so-academic. Herman wrote the song because it was demanded of him after the success of the Dolly number. It is a tremendous number. It works in the show. The orchestrations by Don Pippen are thrilling. The choreography by Onna White builds and builds. And at the center stands the glorious energy of light and star power- Angela Lansbury. If you witnessed the Jerry Herman tribute last year when Ron Raines and a huge orchestra and chorus sang the entire very long number, you have witnessed its power. That said, I don't see a revival in the near future.****

I agree with all of that, but it would have been nice if Herman had written the lyrics so that they were more appropriate to the situation at hand, rather than turning the song into mostly a celebration of all things Southern, including cotton picking (with all of the baggage that entails) and such lyrics as "You've given us the drive again to make the South revive again" and "This time the South will rise again!"
