The track record for re-making films that won the Best Picture Oscar is not good. The remakes of Cimarron, Mutiny on the Bounty, All the King's Men, Around the World in 80 Days, and Ben-Hur are pretty dismal. Hamlet is a special case because the newer versions are not so much a remake of Olivier's vision but entirely different interpretations.
Of course, no director with Spielberg's credentials and track record was involved with remaking the other 5 Best Picture winners. I'm a big fan of Spielberg's best films so I'm cautiously optimistic.
