This doesn't really excuse them, but during the period that Mame was conceived, there were quite a few Broadway and film comedies that played pregnancy -- usually unexpected, often unwanted -- for laughs: Never Too Late; The Wayward Stork; Doctor, You've Got to be Kidding!; Prudence and the Pill, etc. Perhaps Lawrence and Lee thought they were being hip.
