It certainly has more stakes, at least for Lady Larkin. If this was not a broad, cartoony comedy, the audience might wonder what the penalty is going to be for Larkin here, if the whole situation with Princess Winnifred doesn't work out. The law that we hear about doesn't explicitly ban single women from having babies, but the fact that Larkin considers self-exile tells us that, at least, SHE thinks the consequences are potentially very bad, even with Harry standing by her.

One thing I thought was amusing about the overall terrible 1996 Broadway revival was that we were shown that quite a number of women in this court was pregnant, including, in a fun reveal, an onstage female cellist.
