Much of the humor in the Agnes Gooch character comes from her metamorphosis: from a nerd in a shapeless sweater to a lady who went out to "live" and came home with a reminder. (The play and movie of AUNTIE MAME never even raise abortion, which would have been the practical solution in real life.) And as I said, Peggy Cass's great work makes it play as comedy, not soap opera. Opinions can vary, of course. I think it helps to have a healthy sense of humor to appreciate Gooch's plight. Most audiences have it.
