Opinions can vary, of course. I think it helps to have a healthy sense of humor to appreciate Gooch's plight. Most audiences have it.
I think I have a very healthy sense of humor. But while I will admit that I found the subplot of Gooch's impending unwed motherhood funny when I first got to know MAME as a teenager, it didn't take me very long to realize that the subplot is not remotely funny but, rather, quite pathetic and distasteful. And now I'm embarrassed to say that I ever found it funny at all.
