In the biography of Natalie Wood, it's discussed that the only person Wood didn't get along with was Moreno, and Moreno claimed it was Wood that was aloof towards her. I understand Moreno's point 100% but I don't know who she thinks could have been cast in that day who was Latina and was a big enough name for the movie. Conversely, maybe Wood could have tried harder to understand the Puerto Rican culture which would have resulted in a more nuanced performance. Or maybe Moreno tossed shade about it and Wood took offense--Wood was a huge star and didn't need to please Moreno. But there are very very few stories of Wood not getting along with her costars, even when she was unhappy with herself. At the end of the day, though the accent is a little heavy-handed, Wood's performance is sweet and nuanced and moving and she certainly works with the ensemble, not against them. And I always freeze frame on that big fat movie star closeup during "Tonight" and just stare at her beauty!
