There has always been something very murky about this. I used to wonder if it was some kind of joke, because Rita‘s husband was named Leonard Gordon. There but for an r and a d...

I have read that Rita sings all of My Lord and Master, which is heard on the soundtrack album but is not performed in the film. Years ago, on the American Movie Classics channel, when it was indeed still showing American Movie Classics without commercial interruption, there was a special broadcast about the films of Rogers and Hammerstein. Rita was interviewed in it, and spoke of being grateful to have sung one song in the film. I always assumed she was referring to the one song we see Tuptim singing in the film, We Kiss In A Shadow. Some reports give all the credit to Leona Gordon, some say she dubbed a few notes. Who knows? I’d say someone should ask Rita, but if she’s going to respond to the question as she does when asked about Betty Wand and Natalie Wood, perhaps the question is best left unasked.
