Really? It's pretty obvious what Joe means, it's a pretty good descriptor of a producer who doesn't take risks and like to dazzle his audiences with garbage and sugary-sweet nonsense. Seems pretty obvious, and if it's obvious, I wouldn't call it unimaginative.
I mean, it's not Cole Porter, or Sondheim... but a dazzling display of wordsmithery or allusion wouldn't really be appropriate at this moment in the story, either...
