You're right. The knife cuts both ways. And we are more likely to notice the Britishisms. I would argue, however, that in the case of Sunset Boulevard, it points to the show's inability to capture the hard, wisecracking tone of the original screenplay. What I dislike about the musical is the way it softens the film, pressing the audience for tears.
