I actually did look up the term recently because it was used in an Edwardian British novel I was reading. And the definition was not easy to find (that it's still a usage for any kind of Christmas style string of lights). The definition I found was colored cut glass vessel candle holders with a rim in which a wire could be wound around so the vessel could be hung either on strings or trees.
