I watched it today and quite liked it. I was a huge fan of the original Broadway production and saw it more times than I can count. It was a beautiful show sensitively directed by Susan H. Schulman. This new version was very enjoyable, fantastically sung, acted very nicely, and overall a very moving experience. The cast was very brave to allow a rehearsal to be streamed, and there really wasn't a weak link to be found. I think THE SECRET GARDEN is a very tricky show to do; you really need to find the humor in the characters and the things they do, otherwise you end up with a very somber, serious night at the theater. The original production managed to find that humor in the way Mary was such a brat, but still likable because you understood why she was the way she was. Some of the performers were still searching out their characters and line delivery, which is exactly what rehearsals are for.
I loved being able to see this. Now if only the Australian production with original director Schulman and original designer Heidi Ettinger (Landesman back in 1991) could be streamed or offered as a video release, that would be awesome.
I wonder what is next for this production? I assume they will try it out in some regional theater before bringing it in to NY.
