It was Mandy Patinkin who said it.

I think it was the concert format that made her casting questionable. She was an OK singer but by no means a great one. Surrounded by still active powerhouses, her limitations became all the more obvious. That said, she was a stellar example of an "actor who sings," had surprised the ensemble with her dancing ability when she did Anyone Can Whistle, and would probably have been an excellent Phyllis in an all-out production of Follies.
