As an older- 55- man with taste that is, admittedly, becoming SOMEWHAT more conservative as I rack up the birthdays, I have to say that I loved van Hove's take on West Side Story. I don't think it is "replacing" (or trying to replace) the original Robbins staging. It's just a new take from a very specific type of director. I found it incredibly beautiful to watch and the performances- especially Isaac Powell as Tony- strong and very felt.
I really hope it comes back and has another year or so. I went with a 13-year old who had never seen it in any form and she loved it. I imagine there are lots of kids out there who would eat it up.
