|On the contrary, this demonstrates that the vaccine works, even the J&J. In fact, 7 of the 8 were asymptomatic, and the 8th is now asymptomatic. The infections were most likely the result of a rain delay last Saturday in which most of the individuals were indoors in close quarters. The protocol that was followed was that masks and social distancing were not required among members of the Yankees traveling party because they are more than 85% fully vaccinated. (This is the MLB rule.)
We are not "rushing" to reopen theatres. We are opening them 4 months from now, when things will likely be even better. If something terrible happens and they are markedly worse, the reopenings would obviously be cancelled. Vaccine passports (or perhaps test results within the short time frame followed under protocols) will still be necessary, but masks will be voluntary.
Understand that perfection is not the goal. Herd immunity obviously does not protect against infections involving the idiots who have not been vaccinated; it just lowers the odds. Right now we are in "hit by car" territory. Likewise, understand that the goal is not eradication, but to reach a point that infections are not only rare, but more importantly are not consequential. The Yankees scenario provides foundation for those goals. And of course, anyone who wants to be more cautious in the theatre can still wear a mask. But few people were wearing masks to avoid contact with the 8K TB infections in the US every year before there was Covid.
