Thanks for clarifying :-) But first of all, in PORGY AND BESS as written, we only see Bess high on drugs very briefly, and the role has always been played by operatic sopranos, because that's the way it's written. It really wasn't until the (deplorable) Broadway revisal that anyone got it in their heads to have Bess played as a strung-out, dissipated, desperate type in the manner of Billie Hollday on a very bad day.

In order to appreciate PORGY AND BESS, one simply has to accept the convention that the denizens of Catfish Row express themselves by singing in an operatic or quasi-operatic style. That's obviously a stretch for some people, but really, there are MANY operas and musicals written about simple people but cast with performers who have gorgeous, obviously trained voices -- from LE NOZZE DI FIGARO to CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA to WEST SIDES STORY
