There is a long tradition of casting actors far beyond their teen years in teenage roles in films, especially in cases where they were playing the leads and major supporting roles in musicals -- WEST SIDE STORY, BYE BYE BIRDIE, GREASE, and so on. But it seems that many people today have a different expectation, probably because, over the past few decades, there have been more and more films in general (not necessarily musicals) with very young actors in the leads.

This whole DEH debate is very interesting to me because I was very surprised when I heard that Lin-Manuel Miranda would not be recreating his original role of Usnavi in the movie of IN THE HEIGHTS. Initially, it didn't seem to me that the age of that character was all that important or that LMM was necessarily now too old for it, but others pointed out to me some things in the script that indicate he really should not be much older than his early '20s. So they cast Anthony Ramos as Usnavi in the film, and LMM is playing the piragua guy, and I think that was a VERY smart move on everyone's part.
