Awards are subjective, but the answer to your question is simple: Youn simply got more votes than Close from Oscar voters.

And she won over Close at the Screen Actors Guild, too, which represents 160,000 actors. And at the British Academy Awards, too.

For the record, Youn won more than 20 prizes from critics' groups for Supporting Actress. Close won only the Nevada Film Critics Society.

Youn was in ''Minari,'' an acclaimed Best Picture nominee (98% rating at Rotten Tomatoes); Close wasn't (and was even up for a Razzie).

To U.S. audiences, Youn was an unknown Asian actress whose performance was in Korean, so her Oscar victory was quite an achievement.

Youn has singled out Close in her acceptance speeches, and Close has looked happy for Youn. To me, they're both class acts.

(Awards pundits are already predicting Close's next Oscar bid; at the very least, she's overdue for a Lifetime Achievement prize.)
