So apparently, Tom Lehrer had wanted to musicalize Sweeney Todd

From Seriously Funny: The Rebel Comedians of the 1950s and 1960s by Gerald Nachman:

He and Joe Raposo, the late Sesame Street/Electric Company songwriter, took a stab at musicalizing Sweeney Todd decades before Sondheim and James Lapine did it. (The Lehrer-Raposo version was to have been a comedy, starriing, yes, Jerry Colonna.) The grisly fable of “The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” was custom-tailored for Lehrer's mordant wit and devious wordplay. “Nothing ever came of it, and of course twenty years later Stephen Sondheim beat me to the punch.”

The mind boggles.
