Gerald Nachman might've mistaken the librettist of ''Sweeney Todd'' because he wasn't any fan of the Sondheim masterpiece. When the touring production, starring George Hearn and Angela Lansbury, came to San Francisco, Nachman was a critic for the S.F. Chronicle, and he panned it.
As for Lehrer, he might've given us a hint of how he might've written ''Sweeney'' with his comic (and cannibalistic) wit. One of Lehrer's classics is ''I Hold Your Hand in Mine,'' and it goes: ''I hold your hand in mine, dear. I press it to my lips. I take a healthy bite from your dainty fingertips ...'''
