| Bye-bye Birdie happens to be on television tonight. I’ve never actually seen it and even after five minutes I’m finding it intolerable. The choreography for the telephone hour is weird and a poor substitute for Gower champions stage concept. And the musical arrangement doesn’t seem to build. And the casting of Harvey Johnson is offputting because he’s an aggressively odd looking actor who certainly doesn’t seem like a teenager, which is the same for all the girls in the number. And in the scene in Alberts office why on God’s green earth does he have stencilled lettering on windows that face outside 10 or 15 floors above Times Square? It’s like he’s advertising for the passing pigeons. And the weirdness of Maureen Stapleton playing Mrs. Peterson when she was only a couple of years older than Dick Van Dyke is really irritating. Am I alone in my misgivings? |
