The screenplay is awfully silly but it never pretends not to be, and the musical numbers in the film are all excellent. Onna White, her stars and the ensemble had and gave a great time with The Telephone Hour and A Lot of Livin' To Do in particular, and the title song is better than anything it replaced.

Is there a general consensus on any project?

I know Van Dyke and Lynde resented the changes made in turning it into a film, but Ann-Margret had true star quality and the idea of beefing up the teenager's roles is not a bad one in a film about a drafted rock idol. Rock and Roll had become even more firmly entrenched by 1962 when the film was shot than it had been two years earlier when the show opened.
