| ''Reportedly, the original Broadway show had a very well-crafted book ...'' I love many of the Charles Strouse and Lee Adams catchy songs, but Michael Stewart's book has always bugged me. To me, the main story should center on the triangle among Kim, Hugo and Conrad. It's Conrad's arrival to Sweet Apple that upsets everything in town. ... I've never found the characters of Albert and Rosie or their storyline interesting. ''An English Teacher'' seems like a weak opener. And ''The Shriners Ballet'' is another time-waster. If it were up to me, the brilliant ''Telephone Hour'' would open the show (and I'd drop Albert and Rosie). ... My favorite highlight from the 1963 movie is ''Got a Lot of Livin' to Do,'' thanks to Jesse Pearson, Ann-Margret and Bobby Rydell and Onna White's lively choreography. My least favorite thing about the movie is the ludicrous plot about speeding up the Russian ballet, so Conrad gets his airtime. Anyone else catch the 2009 revival of ''Birdie'' on Broadway? Largely ho-hum, but happily it incorporated the film's fun title tune as the closer. I also happened to see Jim Walton go on as Harry MacAfee, and he did a riotous riff on Paul Lynde. |
