In the Heights not doing well in its second weekend

In the Heights is estimated to be #6 at the box office this weekend, with a 3-day total of $4.5 million, down 61% with a cumulative estimated total after this weekend of $19.9 million. There was only one new movie opening wide this weekend, so for it to go from #2 to #6 is pretty bad. It probably wasn't helped by the premiere on Disney+ this weekend of the new Pixar film, Luca.

In reading about the box office and the decision to keep Luca out of the theaters, I learned that the Disney+ and HBOMax subscriber bases are much larger than I thought they were. Disney+ has 103 million worldwide subscribers. The typical rate (at least in the US) is $80 a year, so that means that subscribers are paying $8 BILLION a year. That's why Disney is pushing Disney+ so hard. Their goal is 250 million worldwide subscribers by the end of 2024.

HBO and HBOMax have about 60 million worldwide subscribers, 44 million in the US.

There is an interesting article in Variety that says that the percent of total streaming time that In the Heights had compared to other HBO Max releases was high, but total streaming time was way down. The speculation is that now that places are opening up and the weather is improving, people are doing things other than watch streaming services at home. That was an unlucky break for In the Heights. It doesn't matter how good word of mouth is if people aren't watching it and can therefore tell others about it.
