| Well-said, Thom915. I went back to see ''In the Heights'' again this weekend because I want to support movie theaters, as well as Jon M. Chu, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Warner Brothers. It's a historic and exuberant showcase of Latino talent, and it's a visual knockout that demands to be seen on the big screen. ''96,000,'' in particular, features hundreds of dancers and has been reimagined as a huge homage to Esther Williams, set at Washington Heights' Highbridge Pool. If you believe in big movie musicals and diversity, ''In the Heights'' is your shot to show your support. Even with its rave reviews and massive marketing push, even with its A rating from CinemaScore, even before the colorism controversy broke out (see link below), the sad reality is that many moviegoers just weren't interested. Could more star power have boosted it at the box office? A bigger turnout from moviegoers of color? Who knows. It is a shame when a big mainstream movie with people of color underperforms because it makes it that much harder for the next one to get made. And even the rare ones that succeed are written off as flukes. Wayne Wang's ''The Joy Luck Club'' was a critical and box office hit in 1993, but it would take ANOTHER 25 years before the next mainstream Hollywood movie about Asians arrived: ''Crazy Rich Asians'' (2018), directed by Jon M. Chu. Even its success ($238 million worldwide) hasn't spawned a spate of more Asian rom-coms. Meantime, Scott Mendelson offers a pretty blunt and sobering assessment at Forbes.com: ''Alas, 'In the Heights' is an old-fashioned box office bomb, at least in North America. The critically-acclaimed musical melodrama earned $1.375 million on Friday, plunging 73% from its lousy $5 million opening day. ... There will be no 'Greatest Showman' (or even 'Mamma Mia')-style legs for this one. It’ll be lucky to top $35 million, which is where some more optimistic folks hoped it would open last weekend. Warner knew that the Film Twitter hype wasn’t translating into the real world, even if the film’s controversies relating to light-skinned casting seemingly has. What a mess.'' |
