| Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was also a huge hit with a $395 million box office take. Of course, it had the advantage of being a follow-up to the incredibly successful Mamma Mia!. Over the last two decades, in addition to Mamma Mia!, film versions of Broadway musicals like Chicago, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods were all solid, commercially successful movies. Rent, Nine, and Cats were box office bombs. Jersey Boys didn't fare as badly, but most likely lost money. The Phantom of the Opera was undoubtedly a disappointment, but not necessarily a box office loser. In the Heights is a headscratcher. The reviews were all raves. Word of mouth seemed to be strong. I've been a big fan of the show, saw it 3 times in New York, and twice in Chicago. I caught the movie last week and thought it was just about as good a film version as was conceivably possible. I'll be seeing it again tomorrow. Should Lin-Manuel (despite his age) have played Usnavi? He was the male lead in Mary Poppins Returns, which was a huge box office success. |
