I was 14 when I saw Bye Bye Birdie at the LaGrange Movie Theater in LaGrange, IL (it seated 1450 in 1963). I went with a bunch of my friends from LT high school. Back then none of the guys I hung out with would go to see a musical at the movies. They liked westerns and epic adventure films like The Vikings, Ben-Hur, The Alamo, Spartacus, and others. However, Bye Bye Birdie was the exception to the rule because we all were in love with Ann-Margret.
I had the OBC LP and was disappointed that so many terrific songs I enjoyed were not in the movie, but I still liked the film a lot. It was funny. The musical numbers were spectacular, and the cast was great. Of course, at 14, what the hell did I know? |
