| ''Rent, Nine, and Cats were box office bombs.'' ... Maybe Hollywood should avoid musicals with one-word titles and only 4 letters apiece. ;) As for Lin-Manuel MIranda, Universal Studios acquired the screen rights to ''In the Heights'' in 2008, and the plan WAS to have him re-create his role of Usnavi. But the Universal deal fell through in 2011 because the studio didn't want to make it unless it had a bankable Latino star, like Jennifer Lopez. To make a long story short, the film rights reverted to Miranda, and Warner Bros. snapped them up in 2018. At that time Miranda felt he had aged out of the role, but was knocked out by seeing Ramos play Usnavi in ''In the Heights'' at the Kennedy Center. As Vox.com put it: ''It seemed almost too perfect: The actor who played Miranda’s son on Broadway [in 'Hamilton'] would take over the role that first made Miranda famous.'' Plus, Miranda (now 41) says the role of Usnavi ''fits'' Ramos, who's 29, ''better [than me]. He doesn’t have to put anything on. I think spiritually I’m closer to a Nina than an Usnavi, and watching him embody the hopes and struggles of this neighborhood just felt like a suit that fit him perfectly.” |
