Along those same lines, Bill Maher's recent TV rant about ''In the Heights'' was infuriating. Lin-Manuel Miranda addressed the casting controversy with a classy and compassionate response: ''I hear the hurt and frustration over colorism, of still feeling unseen. I hear that without sufficient Afro-Latino representation ... in trying to paint a mosaic of this community, we fell short. I'm truly sorry. ... Thank you for your honest feedback. I promise to do better.'' Maher's reaction? He ranted and urged Miranda to ''stop the apologizing.'' After all, he was the creator of ''Hamilton.'' Maher added: ''Nothing is ever good enough for these people. They're children. ... Shut the f*ck up. Quit bitching. People have to stand up to these bullies.''

In truth, it's Maher who has the ''bully'' pulpit, blithely dismissing the real concerns of Afro-Latinos, which often go unheard. Carmen Phillips, a Black Puerto Rican writer, says: “If we’re going to tell Latinx stories, we should be honest about colorism and racism in our communities. The decision to cut the plot of Nina’s dad being anti-Black from the [Broadway show] and the online conversations about colorism in the movie are of the same coin.”

Maher could've invited Miranda and an Afro-Latino writer onto his ''Real Time'' TV show to illuminate the history and legacy of colorism.

Instead, Maher whipped himself into an outrage over perceived ''wokeness.'' Sorry, but people of color don't need to be told to ''shut the f*ck up'' and lectured on race by Maher, a white guy who once had to apologize for using the N-word on-air.
