| A Comedy from 1856 MY WIFE'S MIRROR by Edward G.P. Wilkins Marital Instruction from the Victorians June 26, 2021 Obie Award winner Metropolitan Playhouse presents a live-streamed readings of two new plays, free of charge, with a talkback to follow: MY WIFE'S MIRROR, by by Edward G.P. Wilkins. 6/26/2021 at 8:00 pm (Eastern) through 6/30/2021 at 10:00 pm (Eastern) Running Time: 1 hour Free of charge. Available at: www.MetropolitanPlayhouse.org/mywifesmirror The program will be available for four days following its premiere on the Playhouse webpage, YouTube channel, and Facebook page. Susan Racket is refined, delicate, and enraptured by her five-days new husband, who loves her equally in return. But when domestic habitation reveals vices that had been hidden during their courtship, only by adopting the manner of the Devil can she reform him. Imitation proves no form of flattery at all. First produced at Laura Keene's Varieties--a groundbreaking theater run by the actress/impressario--My Wife's Mirror is full of literary and topical japes, even as its calling out of double standards is absolutely current. The reading will be followed by a guest scholar's talk and commentary MY WIFE'S MIRROR is directed by Alex Roe and features Andrew Firda, Charles Jeffries, Greta Quispe, David Logan Rankin, and Barbra Wengerd. Artwork by Medusa Studio. EDWARD (NED) G.P. WILKINS, while practically forgotten today, was a luminary of the circle of mid-19th century Bohemians, whose ranks included Ada Clare, Henry Clapp, and Walt Whitman, of whom he was an early champion. He was a leading essayist, critic of music and drama, and playwright, writing for the New York Herald, and later for the Saturday Press, for which he penned a weekly column under the pen-name Personne. In the words of William Winter, he was among the first "to gild the dreariness of criticism with the glitter of wit." His best known plays are Young New York and My Wife's Mirror, both written in 1856 and produced at Laura Keene's Varieties. Ultimately, Wilkins fell out with Ms. Keene, particularly critical of her production of what he termed "filibusters,' plagarized scripts presented as originals in order to avoid copywright. The VIRTUAL PLAYHOUSE began on March 28, 2020, and has presented nearly 100 new readings and performances. The program has evolved to be a video/stage hybrid that far exceeds the expectations of online readings. Exploring the possibilities of "remote" ensemble, Metropolitan has pushed the envelope of Zoom broadcasts, with increasingly sophisticated virtual settings and sound design. Each reading is enhanced by conversation with the artists and a guest scholar for an hour-long live entertainment every Saturday night. Reaching an audience across the country and around the globe, the presentation of the forgotten one-act plays is an ideal way to pursue the theater's mission exploring America's diverse theatrical history. The Virtual Playhouse is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. The Virtual Playhouse is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York state Legislature. METROPOLITAN PLAYHOUSE, in its 29th season, explores America’s diverse theatrical heritage through lost plays of the past and new plays of American historical and cultural moment. The theater received a 2011 OBIE Grant from The Village Voice for its ongoing productions that illuminate who we are by revealing where we have come from. Called "invaluable" by the Voice, Backstage and Talkin' B?oadway, Metropolitan has earned further accolades from The New York Times and The New Yorker. Other awards include a Victorian Society of New York Outstanding Performing Arts Group, 3 Aggie Awards from Gay City News, 21 nominations for NYIT Awards (3 winners), and 6 AUDELCO Viv Award nominations. ARTISTS' RELIEF The Playhouse's virtual readings serve to help us compensate performing artists, so particularly hurt during this long ""pause.""
